Where should I travel to for Christmas?

Asia – East and South-east Asia in particular – offers a whole host of exciting destinations that are perfect for a Christmas getaway.

Thailand in December

Thailand is known for its exciting cities, welcoming people and not least the most stunning islands and beaches.

December is high season in the country. And it’s not hard to understand why!

At this time of the year, you will enjoy lovely, warm temperatures, very little rain and lots of sunshine!

• In northern Thailand, there are pleasant temperatures during the day and cooler temperatures at night

• In central Thailand, it is relatively hot during the day with slightly cooler nights.

• In southern Thailand, it is hot day and night. Note that in the west, e.g. in Krabi and Koh Hai, it is the dry season, while in the east, e.g. on Koh Samui, it is the rainy season.

Sri Lanka in December

Sri Lanka has so much to offer, whether you’re into culture, wildlife or the beach.

In December, Sri Lanka offers plenty of blue sky, sunshine and very little rain, all depending on which part of the country you are in.

• It is dry season in the west and south-west of Sri Lanka in December.

• Eastern and north-eastern Sri Lanka are characterised by the Maha Monsoon, which brings rain.

So December is a great time to visit Sri Lanka’s western and south-western coasts. The Yala Monsoon has come and gone, and you can expect blue skies and plenty of sunshine instead.

The highlands, which are always wetter than the coastal areas, are, however, also a good destination in December. The rainfall in the preceding months means that Sri Lanka is now greener and lusher in these areas, making a visit to Sri Lanka’s national parks even more beautiful.

Due to the Maha Monsoon in the northern and eastern parts of Sri Lanka in December, beach holidays should be enjoyed in the west and south-west during this period. So if you’d like to experience Sri Lanka’s beautiful beaches, you can choose to round off your tour in Negombo, Mirissa or Hikkaduwa. Vietnam in December

The Christmas season is a wonderfully scenic time to visit Vietnam.

The climate is mild in all regions, though you should be aware of the considerable regional differences between north and south.

• The southern part of Vietnam has sunny days with hardly any rain.

• Central Vietnam is warmer than in the north and cooler than in the south.

• The northern part of Vietnam is dry, but December is one of the coldest months of the year in this area.

So December is the perfect time of the year for a combination of exciting sights in south and central Vietnam, rounding off with a beach holiday in the south, in Phan Thiet or Phu Quoc, for example.

You can also combine Vietnam with Cambodia’s main attraction Angkor Wat, or with both Cambodia and Laos, which is a popular choice in December.
