Highlights of Cambodia & Beach holiday

Cambodia’s Angkor Wat, colonial age, Killing Fields and two days of delightful beach holiday.

Choose this tour because …

The towns and cities of Cambodia feature a charming mix of French colonial style distinguished by shady avenues lined with magnificent villas, and traces of a rich Buddhist heritage, with temples, pagodas and traditional houses. Past and present mix and merge out in the country as well, where farmers drive ox carts, plant rice by hand in the paddy fields – but have satellite dishes on their thatched huts … The whole image is bound together by magnificent, lush countryside which – left unchecked – will quickly swallow up the grandeur as well as the sins of the past, as happened at Angkor, the fantastic ruined city of the Khmer regime. Tuol Sleng and the Killing Fields were born of the infamous Khmer Rouge ‘cultural revolution’, whose atrocities defy comprehension. The sandy beaches of Kep are perfect for relaxation in the cooling breeze blowing in across the turquoise waters of the Gulf of Siam.

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Flight to Siem Reap

Departure day, where you will fly to Siem Reap with connecting flights along the way.

Day 2: Arrival in Siem Reap

On arrival in Siem Reap, you will be issued with your visa at the airport and can then collect your luggage. You will be met in the arrivals hall by a guide holding an Asiatours sign, who will accompany you to the hotel where you will be spending the next three nights. When you arrive at the hotel, you will have time to rest after your long flight and the remainder of the day is yours to do with as you wish.

Day 3: Sightseeing tour to Angkor Thom – Angkor Wat

Today’s sightseeing tour takes you to one of the absolute highlights of your tour to Cambodia – the magnificent temple complex of Angkor. The area was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List back in 1992. Your visit starts at the south gate, near Angkor Thom, from where you walk alongside the old city wall to view the Prasat Chrung temple ruins. You then make your way to the Bayon temple, where ten Buddha faces smile in greeting. There will also be time to see the Elephant Terrace and the Royal Palace of Phimeanaka, and – of course – the famous Ta Prohm temple.

After lunch in Siem Reap, the tour continues to the best-preserved and most famous temple in the entire Angkor area: Angkor Wat. You will have time to explore the area both with a guide and for yourself before heading off to either Phnom Bakheng or Pre Rup to admire the sunset.

Day 4: Village excursion

Today, you have the opportunity to visit a village located 40 km from Siem Reap. We have chosen a village that attracts few tourists, so as to give you an authentic taste of life in the country in Cambodia.

A local guide will be waiting for you, and you will ride an ox cart through the village to a house where the family makes brooms from natural materials. They collect these materials once a year and store them safely so that they can continue making brooms at a steady pace throughout the year. You will then walk through the village with your guide, experiencing the everyday life of the villagers and the seasonal activities they perform. You can even take part in these activities, learning to plant or harvest rice or vegetables, herd ducks or cattle, or fish in traditional style. You will then join a local family for a simple but tasty Khmer lunch.

Before returning to your hotel at the end of the afternoon, you will receive a traditional blessing from a monk at the local temple.

Day 5: Siem Reap - Battambang

The morning is given over to the 2-hour drive to Battambang. The city is well-known for its French colonial architecture, its fertile soil and the rich ruby and garnet granite mines. In the afternoon, you will drive to Phnom Banan to enjoy a magnificent view out over the surrounding landscape. From there, you will continue on to Phnom Sampeau, an area of cliffs featuring a variety of grottoes. This beautiful area played a major role in the Khmer Rouge’s reign of terror. A number of the Khmer Rouge’s ‘special enemies’ – doctors and teachers, for example – were killed and thrown into these grottoes. The mood here is surprisingly light, because as the Cambodian people say: happiness is the best way to overcome the tragedies of the past.

Day 6: Battambang – Udong – Phnom Penh

Today, you will be travelling from Battambang to Phnom Penh, a journey that takes 4–5 hours non-stop. However, you will spend the early part of the morning visiting the Ek Phnom temple, which dates back to the 1000s. The temple is perhaps the most notable sight in Battambang. It is beautifully decorated with wood carvings that are still in excellent condition.

After lunch, it is time to start the road tour to Phnom Penh. En route, you will call in at Kompong Chhnang, which is famous for its numerous pottery workshops. The next stop is Udong, approximately 40 km north-west of Phnom Penh. Udong was the capital of the Kingdom of Cambodia for around 250 years. The city lost its status in 1866, when King Norodom transferred his court to Phnom Penh, making this city the capital of the country. You will arrive in Phnom Penh towards the end of the afternoon and will check into the hotel where you will be spending the next two nights.

Day 7: Sightseeing in Phnom Penh

Your guide will take you on a tour of the highlights, sights and attractions of this busy, thriving city, which is the capital of Cambodia. You will have the chance to experience the fascinating Royal Palace, the Silver Pagoda and the National Museum. You can also climb up to Wat Phnom, the principal temple in the city, where thousands of religious devotees can be seen every day – along with large flocks of monkeys. No visit to Phnom Penh is complete, however, without a visit to Tuol Sleng, a museum devoted to the genocide committed by the Khmer Rouge. The museum documents the atrocities suffered by the Cambodian people.

The tour ends with a tour to Choeung Ek, which became famous throughout the world as ‘The Killing Fields’. It was here that more than 17,000 people were murdered by the Khmer Rouge and buried in mass graves. After the sightseeing tour, you can explore the busy streets and alleyways of the exotic old quarter for yourself, stopping as you please to admire different sights and to take in all the sounds of the amazing city.

Day 8: Phnom Penh – Kep

You will be collected from your hotel in Phnom Penh and driven to the charming coastal city of Kep. On arrival in Kep, you will check into your hotel, after which the rest of the day is yours to do with as you please.
Kep is a little gem on the coast – an enchanting glimpse of French Indochina, of Asian and French cuisine, of the clear water and delightful beaches of an authentic tropical holiday town. The golden years of the city started in the 1930s and continued until the Khmer Rouge seized power in the 1970s, after which Kep was quietly forgotten.

Today, many of the old French villas that line the beach promenade have been fully renovated and converted into boutique hotels that radiate French elegance and Cambodian hospitality. The city is home to a host of restaurants and cafés serving delicious meals and fantastic drinks.

You will be spending the next three nights at Veranda Natural Resort.

Days 9-10: Relaxing beach holiday in Kep

The days are yours to do with as you wish. Relax by the pool at the charming resort or take a stroll through the city and admire the beautiful colonial age buildings. You could also take a tour to Rabbit Island and enjoy the white sandy beaches for which it is rightly famous.

Day 11: Departure day

You are picked up at your hotel and driven to the airport, from where you fly home to the UK, connecting flights along the way.

Day 12: Arrival back home

You arrive in the UK after a lovely holiday.
