Why should I experience Asia’s culture and history?

The Asian continent is a promised land for anyone interested in culture and history.

For example, you can experience Buddhist culture, ancient geisha traditions or get up close to the old Chinese dynasties – and this is just a small selection of what Asia has to offer.

So if you are dreaming of a tour that takes you to the major cultural and historical attractions, then these tours are the ones you must go exploring with.

Tours focusing on culture and history

No matter which of our tours you select, you will be met with exciting stories about the Asian countries’ histories, religions and cultural traditions.

The tours we have included under the category “Culture and history” offer, to a greater degree than our other tours, historical and/or cultural experiences at the destination. For example, on our tours you can experience attractions on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, but there can also be experiences in history in culture that in some other way have been of key importance for the country in question.

Fascinating architecture in Cambodia

At the northern end of Cambodia is the UNESCO protected ruin city of Angkor, which among other things consists of the Angkor Wat temple complex.

This architectural masterpiece brings you back in time for a while and the Khmer Empire’s history practically pours out of the building walls and their countless inscriptions.

The sunset over Angkor is one experience you will never forget. Because when the sun’s last rays paint the sky in fantastical hues, you will practically have to pinch your arm to realise that you’re really experiencing this magic moment.

Fantastical view of the Bagan plains

The view that awaits you as you look out over the Bagan plains from the pagoda or the top of the temple is as magnificent as the area itself.

More than 2000 pagodas and temples decorate Bagan’s beautiful nature, and you can truly feel the rush of history when, for example, you visit the Ananda Temple, which was built over 900 years ago. The view of the plains with its countless spires wrapped in the last rays of the evening sun will take the breath away of even the most well-travelled.

The Bagan plains are without a doubt a must for those who interested in history and culture.

Feel the thrill of the Lion Rock in Sri Lanka

One of Sri Lanka’s most renowned attractions is the Lion Rock in Sigiriya – and not without reason.

The iconic Lion Rock, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, rises nearly 200 metres up over the surrounding landscape, and you must climb a good 1200 steps to reach the top and see the incredible view that follows. On the top are the ruins of the fort King Kashyapa built over 1500 years ago.

On your way to the top, you can see many well-preserved frescoes as well as the lion’s paws, the only remnant of the gigantic lion at the entrance. One cannot comprehend the magnificence of the Lion Rock before seeing it with one’s own eyes.

Go exploring in the old district of Hoi An, Vietnam

It’s no wonder that Hoi An’s old district is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, as the district is nothing less than irresistible.

Charming yellow merchant houses, Chinese temples, vibrantly colourful lanterns and the historical Japanese bridge are just some of the attractions the old district has to offer.

Take a walk along the Thu Bon River in the evening hours and enjoy a drink on one of the boats. Next, go to Nguyen Thai Hoc Street and see the vibrantly colourful lanterns light up, and finally, cross the Japanese bridge.

Hoi An’s old district is love at first sight.

A mix of traditions in Luang Prabang in Laos

Luang Prabang is a melting pot of traditions. The combination of Laotian architecture spiced with French colonial charm is completely unique.

Luang Prabang’s city views are well-preserved, and a walk through the town grants insights into a city formed from many cultures. And it is precisely this unique cultural mix that has helped Luang Prabang secure a spot on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

For example, the cultures are expressed in the combination of traditional Laotian wood houses, and brick houses, which were built during the French Colonial Era.

Experience unique geisha culture in Kyoto in Japan

Kyoto’s streets exude history. But you can experience more than just the legacy of the geisha.

The fascinating and graceful women known today as maiko, as students, and geiko, once fully trained, are absolutely still alive and kicking and remain a part of Japanese culture.

For example, you can see these white-painted women in a traditional tea ceremony, where cultural and history go hand in hand, or you can take a walk in the Gion district, which is still home to a traditional school.

When you see these silk-clad women elegantly make their way through the streets, it practically looks like a post card from some lost age.

Be enchanted by the magnificence of the Great Wall of China

The magnificence of the Great Wall of China practically defies description.

The wall, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, is a piece of history on its own. The stones in the wall tell the story of how the Qin Dynasty wished to protect the country and therefore started the construction of the wall in 220 AD. Through the ages, the wall has also been a symbol of power.

The Great Wall of China has a beautiful location in the mountainous landscape and is a unique monument, spellbinding all who experience it.

Get up close to culture in the Grand Palace in Thailand

Buddhist culture and history are present all over Thailand. When you visit the country’s temples, you experience the religion immediately and notice how important Buddhism is to the country.

For example, you can visit Grand Palace in Bangkok, where culture and history are also in focus. Here, where the Buddhist traditions are kept alive, you are spellbound by the entire temple grounds’ golden temple wonders, and you are filled with awe when you experience Thailand’s most sacred Buddha statue.

As you walk among the many gorgeous religious buildings, you cannot help but feel small.
