Why should you holiday in the Maldives?

The Maldives are an independent island state south-west of Sri Lanka in the Indian Ocean.

The archipelago consists of 1,190 beautiful islands, of which only around 200 are inhabited. The islands are divided into 26 archipelagos known as “atolls”.

Most people associate the Maldives with paradise beaches, which provide the setting for first-class beach holiday experiences next to crystal-clear waters, with stunning coral reef ecosystems beneath the surface. And that’s precisely what you get here!

So do you dream of experiencing some of the world’s most scenic surroundings?

Then treat yourself to a spot of luxury and romance on a holiday in the exquisite Maldives!

Our package holidays to the Maldives

It is possible to travel to the Maldives and enjoy the islands in their own right or in combination with a tour to Sri Lanka.

Please note that if you select the Maldives on our Sri Lanka with children tour, you will stay at a family-friendly resort, Bandos Island, and not Summer Island as described below.

Below you can read about some of the things you can experience on our holidays.

The Maldives – the ultimate beach holiday destination

The Maldives are an island paradise, and the main reason for visiting the Maldives is its paradise beaches, and the possibility of holidaying at the ultimate beach holiday destination.

We use the award-winning Summer Island Resort, which is located on the island of Ziyaaraiyfushi in the North Male Atoll, approximately 45 minutes from the main island of Malé.

Many of the islands in the Maldives are so-called resort islands, which means that the different resorts have their own private island.

So Summer Island is the only resort on Ziyaaraiyfushi and offers plenty of space to enjoy the many hours of sunshine on the beautiful beaches. Summer Island is even known as a barefoot paradise. So slip off your shoes and enjoy the feeling of the lovely sand between your toes.

The beach front, the water and the resort also offer a whole host of activities, in addition to the hours spent relaxing in the sun lounger.

  • Rent snorkelling equipment at the resort and explore the amazing world of tropical rainbow-coloured fish hiding beneath the surface of the water.
  • Visit the resort’s gym, which is equipped with state-of-the-art exercise machines, go kayaking or paddle boarding, or take a walk along the waterfront in the fabulous white sand.
  • And top it all off by booking a luxurious spa treatment, which can help you unwind even more – if that’s even possible!

Other highlights in the Maldives

If you wish to explore a little more of the Maldives, you can book various excursions off the island. The resort is happy to assist you with this.

  • Summer Island is ideally located for scuba diving, as it offers easy access to many of the best diving sites in the Maldives. You might like to join the island’s diving school on an excursion to Manta Point, for example, where large shoals of massive manta rays arrive in the north-eastern monsoon season.
  • Explore the capital of the Maldives, Malé, where you will find a number of attractions such as the National Museum, the Grand Friday Mosque and a host of restaurants and markets, such as the Malé Fish Market or Malé Local Market.
  • Go on a combined sunset and dolphin cruise, where you might be lucky enough to see the playful dolphins at close range while the sun sets on the horizon.

Combine with Sri Lanka

The Maldives are a mere 1½-hour flight away from Sri Lanka, making them the obvious destination to combine with Sri Lanka. Check which tours this is possible on under the various holidays to Sri Lanka.

In Sri Lanka, you will find a vast array of amazing experiences in a relatively small area.

Some of the highlights include:

  • The 200-metre-high Lion Rock of Sigiriya, which is Sri Lanka’s most visited historical attraction and one the world’s most beautiful ruins, affording the most scenic views from the top – which you reach after climbing the 1,000 or so steps to the top.
  • Sri Lanka’s cultural capital, Kandy, where, among other things, you can learn how tea is made and visit the Temple of the Tooth, which is said to house one of Buddha’s canine teeth.
  • Safari in Sri Lanka’s oldest national park, Yala National Park, which is home to 44 different kinds of mammals and 215 different bird species, giving you plenty of opportunity to experience the Sri Lankan wildlife.

The weather in Maldives month by month

The Maldives are located close to the equator, south-west of Sri Lanka and India, and therefore have a tropical climate. This means that the temperature is approximately 28–30 degrees all year round, and the water temperature hardly ever dips below 28 degrees.

However, the Maldives have two seasons: a dry season and a rainy season.

The dry season extends from November to April, making it peak season on the Maldives. At this time of the year, there is plenty of sunshine and almost no clouds, rain is minimal and humidity is therefore low. The sea is calm and clear, creating the perfect conditions for diving and snorkelling. The dry season is due to the warm, dry Iruvai monsoon that blows in over the Maldives from the north-east.

The rainy season extends from May to October. During this period, it is still hot, but more cloudy, and you may experience rain on a daily basis. The south-westerly Hulhangu monsoon blows tropical rain across the archipelago, especially over the southernmost islands. However, you should not expect day-long rain, but brief, heavy showers, often followed by sun. Due to the increased rain, humidity is higher during this period. September and October are the rainiest months, and thunder may also occur.
