Situated between the life-giving Irrawaddy River to the west and the mountains to the east are Bagan’s great plains with their thousands of ancient iconic temples, stupas and pagodas. It is almost as if the religious buildings have been scattered across the landscape by a huge hand.
You take off as the sun is rising, and in the first soft light of the day, the buildings and trees are silhouetted. As the sun gently rises in the sky, you will clearly see the terracotta colours of the buildings, the greenery of the trees and grass, and the beige sandy soil of the paths and roads. There is a particularly magical mood over the Bagan Plain in the early hours of the morning, and on a balloon ride this is only enhanced, leaving you with an unforgettable impression.
The tour starts early in the morning, when you will be picked up from your hotel and driven out to the take-off site on the plain. Here, you will be served a light breakfast, which you can eat while you receive safety instructions about the trip. The trip usually takes 45 minutes to an hour, but ultimately, the weather determines how long you will be up in the air. After the balloon ride, you will be given a glass of champagne and a certificate of a successfully-completed flight, so you will always remember this phenomenal experience.
The balloon ride is only possible between 1 October and 31 March.
