A good hour’s drive from Hoi An is the My Son temple complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. My Son was the capital of the old Cham kingdom. Many parts of Vietnam were ruled from this location, as were the regions we know today as Laos and Cambodia. In a sense, one can say that My Son is to Vietnam what Angkor Wat is to Cambodia. The area was heavily bombed during the Vietnam War and it is in ruins today, but fortunately, its atmosphere and grandiosity remain.
It is still not known how the Cham people built the different temples to withstand the high humidity in the area. In recent times, attempts have been made to restore some of the temples, but the difference is clear to see. My Son is truly impressive!
